Johann Julian Taupe was born in 1954 in Gritschach near Villach, Carinthia, and lives and works in Vienna today. His path into art began in Carinthia. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in drawing and painting, and during his youth the idea of becoming an artist gradually took shape. An important early encounter was with the Carinthian artist Hans Bischoffshausen, who became an important influence and source of inspiration for Taupe.

In 1976, Taupe moved to Vienna and began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he studied under Max Weiler until 1981. From 1981 to 1983, he then worked as a lecturer and artistic and academic assistant in Arnulf Rainer’s class.

Even during these early years, Taupe developed an independent approach to painting. His work moves between colour, line and form and grows out of an open and intuitive process. References to the visible world gradually recede, leaving the painting itself at the centre – its colours, forms and the relationships that develop within the image.

In 1983/84, Taupe received the Austrian State Scholarship for Fine Art. Further grants and residencies took him to places including Geneva, Mojácar in Spain and Paris.

Since the late 1970s, Taupe has regularly exhibited in Austria and abroad. His work has been shown at institutions including the Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten, Museum Liaunig, Künstlerhaus Wien and Museum Moderner Kunst – Stiftung Wörlen in Passau, as well as in numerous galleries. In recent years, his work has continued to be presented in solo exhibitions, including at Museum Liaunig in 2021, Galerie der Stadt Villach in 2022 and Galerie Welz in 2025.

Over more than five decades, Johann Julian Taupe has developed a distinctive visual language of his own. His painting is abstract, but never arbitrary. Colour, line and form remain in constant dialogue, changing from one work to the next. The process of painting remains visible and tangible in the finished works, giving them a sense of immediacy, openness and movement.

Taupe belongs to a generation of Austrian artists who have continued to explore and redefine abstract painting in the decades since 1945. His work demonstrates that abstraction is not a closed chapter, but an ongoing process – one in which new images and possibilities continue to emerge.
